  • The lies the Vacation Guides tell us at RCI and II both

I called II a few weeks ago to add my newest Foxrun week to my account and asked if that week would get an AC. After all, the white weeks at the resort get AC's and supposedly a week 52 should also get an AC, since II has that week as RED!

Well, she acted like I was just crazy, because "there are no colors anymore" in II. This was "Sara," an obviously new guide who told me that my week would not get an AC. She said, "why would you think the week was red, the directory doesn't have any designations anymore for color." I told her the website still has colors, besides, we have been II members for 26 years, so I know a little bit about the colors of weeks. Besides, when I bought the week on ebay, they told me it was red. She explains that the colors would be gone soon from the online directory. I told her that they might as well have colors back because there is definitely a difference in the way an off-season week trades as opposed to a red week. Why keep people in the dark as to the reason they cannot get exchanges and just call the bad weeks green, like before. I told her I would like to add the week to the account, so what did she need from me. She said, "if you bought the week on ebay, you cannot use II for that week." I asked to talk to a supervisor. She did not want to turn the call over to a supervisor. I explained that many of my purchases were on ebay and that I have weeks in my account right now that were the result of purchasing on ebay.

Sara puts me on hold. She is gone for a while, I ignore a business call waiting for her return. She comes back and asks if my weeks were ones I rented on ebay. I said they were purchases, deeded into our names forever. Oh, then that is okay. NO KIDDING! So I chose not to pay the fee to add the week to my account.

With RCI, the guides are arguing whether or not we can grab high-demand weeks for instant exchange with our 9,000 points, even though we can see them online, though they say full points and are not discounted, and Madge says we can get anything within that 45-day window.

What things are you being told by these companies that are not true? What is it about their training that leaves them lacking in knowledge, so much so that they would argue something that is not true so vehemently? I cringe when I have to call RCI or II because of the misinformation.

When my ski week 1 did not get offered an AC from II for 2008, I called II to ask why this was the case. Our resort has brand new kitchens and is looking better than ever. I always have been offered an AC, even after that exchanger fell through one of our decks a few years ago. She was very condescending when she explained that this just happens to resorts as they are less in demand. Well, just try to get a ski week one anywhere in Winter Park about October. There will be nothing available in II until April, when the ski season is over. They are not getting my week. I may sell it, after that encounter with that guide. I kept asking her name and could only hear the last part of her name. I was going to turn her in. I did not appreciate her attitude at all.

If they admitted the truth of the matter, II is not going to be our exclusive exchange company starting next January, so that may be closer to the reason why we are not getting an AC.

Remember: never ascribe malice to that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.

When I'm faced with situations like these, I usually say something like, "Excuse me, but I have a call coming in on my other line, I'll call you back in a few minutes." Then, I hang up and call back until I get someone who is competent.

9 times out of 10, the next person I talk to is able to help.

I noticed the comment OY, to your similar thread there, "Aren't you the one that recently gave Madge (RCI) a big pat on the back."

I posted tongue-in-cheek to that one something like Yeah there are those moments. Of course, it's still OY somewhere.

I, too, shop around when I have to use a Guide, which I avoid like the plague. If I can see one is an @$$^)!#, I just thank them and hang up. I do not want a negative comment on our account for the Guide that picks up my next call.

It is no differenent than the problem I had with our CC company yesterday.

Some can't help you because they have not been shown how to.
Some can help you but choose not to.
Some can help you and do.

The sooner you realize which one of the three you have on the phone the better you can do damage control.

With any of the three, ranting and raving will not work. Lay a string down on the table and push on one end with your finger and it will just bunch up (defensive), but if you pull it with the same finger it will follow wherever you take it.

Not sure about II, but RCI has a "big brother" mentality, so be careful as they may just be making notes on anything you have to say. By the time you get to talk to a VG they know who you are and where you live-and maybe even what you've had to say in the past.

To keep from getting someone in trouble I won't say more than I have to. I'll vouch for Tony. Those notes on your account stick around, and pretty much assure that you will have a very hard time from then on.

I was recently denied a "favor" from II b/c it was noted in my account that it wasn't the first time I was asking...

II's loss, but that's another story.

I much rather call than trying to do it online and so far, I have always had good service from RCI or II so cannot complain. One time, RCI talked my SO in renting rather than exchanging our week and I called back to tell them that this wasn't acceptable and it was corrected immediately. I believe it was on hold for 24 hours in case we wanted to change our mind. I guess, we don't use them often enough to experience all these problems here.

If I have a very helpful guide, which has happened more than once, I ask for their name and extension number and put it on our phone list. I make it a point to ask for that person again, when I call in and if they are not there, I leave a phone message and they will call back.

I much prefer the personal touch but we use them so seldom but I am going to call II right now because according to them we own no timeshares at all which is incorrect. We have two.

I'm happy just to get a friendly location. Wanting a specific person is really pushing it.

My test is pretty simple. If they laugh at my first smart-ass comment, there is hope. If they don't, I pretty much know they really don't want to be bothered trying to help me.

Jim, Madge deserves a pat on the back. The person "Madge" is different from the usual VG. I appreciate what she does. Don't forget, I have only been a member of TUG for about 21 months, having joined after a Fairfield saleperson told me to check out TUG. That is an irony in itself. But Madge has answered many of my questions, many of which were asked by other, and RCI is no longer baffling to me. When I see something inconsistent, I will ask, but who did I have before TUG?

You are all ahead of the game. To me, Madge is the greatest thing since lasagna, and her comments on TUG give me the confidence to confront the VG's, not matter what they put on my account. I like that.

I'll offer up my ortho guy again. Madge has the RCI party line and refuses to answer the 'difficult' questions by giving non-answers.

The post I replied to was something about you being happy with RCI at that moment, and I said something like yeah there are those moments every now and then.

                      Maybe it wasn't you.

I get much more straight-forward, less speaking-head, company-line type answers from my Crystal Ball. I understand he has a job and he is dedicated to it, and the company, so from a human relations standpoint it would make no sense for me to demean him or his company. That would be the same as someone insulting whatever company or whatever profession each of us has.

And he understands me. He knows there are things about how his company operates, their business model, that I don't care for and that I feel may be hurting them.

We seem to have a way of bridging our differences without it being personal. We can chew the fat about stuff.

We met when I was discussing a 1-in-4 problem which occurred now 7 years ago. I didn't mention the resort, but he took the time to email me and guess the resort and the year. He said a friend of his had been the rep for the resort and he remembered it. He apologized that I had the problem I had, that it was allowed to go as far as it did.

He didn't have to do that, spend his personal time on the Internet personally apologizing for the way someone in his company treated me. And helping me since.

We talk about personal stuff too, so it is not all about RCI and timesharing. I normally know when another baby is on the way, or just arrived.

Frankly, I never know what his answer might be to something, because we talk human being to human being. On the other hand, I know what Madge's answers will be. She cannot say anything as a real person. She has to give the RCI answers, and they are all pretty standard.

I agree that madge gives out the Party line. I asked her a question concerning an ongoing exchange.

I had been trying from Sept 06 until March 07 to exchange into Lawrence Welk Resort in San Diego for the last week in August. All the reps ensured me that it would be no problem, but it probably wouldn't happen until Jan & Feb when most people make their deposits.

Well when the time came around and LWV wasn't available, the reps started to try to sell me a rental. So I asked how come you have the units to rent, but not to exchange? They told me that RCI buys the units to rent from the resort.

Well.... LWV has been sold out for years, so how can they have units to rent to RCI?

I asked Madge this question, and she never gave me a straight answer. She just kept refering me to an old post that listed the part of the RCI agreement that pretty much says they can do whatever they want with your deposit.

Madge is good for some things, like getting a copy of the RCI guide, but not much else.

I've had both good and bad, honesty and lies. Compared to person I talked to for a half hour at a credit card fraud department yesterday - the guides are genius angels (and I can't post my final comment before hanging up). I've had mostly good luck, but every once in a while you get someone who goes beyond the call in help and then you get the absolute moron who tells you that anything deposited more than 90 days from occupancy is flexchange. The best advice is to hang up (another call is a great ploy) and call back and hope you get someone sane and not bordering on being a moron.

Are they fixed or floating weeks? If floating, one possibility is that not all owners reserve their weeks so they have leftovers. Though, you'd expect them to rent them out themselves instead of giving them to RCI.
