  • Yellowstone National Park, Montana?

What is the best month to go to Yellowstone, and what is the best resorts to be in?

      Closest resorts

Closest resorts are Island Park Village and Lake Condominiums at Big Sky...thru RCI. II has one called Big Sky Resort, but I'm not that familar with it. As far as times, summer is the busiest, although Big SKy is a pretty good ski area...it's about an hour from Yellowstone though.

How close is Island Park Village and Lake Condominiums to the park?

Lake Condos is about an hour

I think that Island Park Village is a little closer, but it's on the other side. Someone else who has been there will surely chime in.

Went through Teton and Yellowstone the end of August. Was a little drier than ideal, but at least no snow. Went on up to Glacier by 2 September. All was lovely. Overnight at Glacier... temp dipped to 29, but temps were fine at Yel.

IPV is about 20 miles away. Maybe a 30 min. drive. Nice resort. Golf course (9 holes) & indoor swimming pool.

My sister was there in Oct. They had snow but saw many, many animals. I believe she stayed at Big Sky.

We own two weeks at Lake Condos at Big Sky, the first two weeks of October. Many of the tourists are gone, there is wildlife everywhere, the fishing is fantastic and the weather is fine; sunny and low to mid 60's.

I'm wondering if it would be better to stay in the park were you are next to everything.
Or stay in a resort and drive the 20 miles , 30 min drive to be in to the park. I have never been there. I don't know what's around Yellowstone park area to see and do, besides seeing Yellowstone park.

We went in July and the weather was great compared to what we are used to here in PA (less humidity and cooler temps) but your climate is different?

The best time to see Yellowstone is just so subjective... when we were there we got to see a lot of animals with babies including bear cubs, young elk, pronghorn, and bison. It was also a great time of the year to see the geothermal stuff and in some of those areas it got a little hot standing in the sun (not to mention the boiling water all around you).

I am sure you already looked, but the resorts database comes up with 11 resorts that mention yellowstone in their description so this might give you a few more ideas:

My only regret was not having enough time! I think I could spent 2-full weeks in Yellowstone and still not see everything I wanted to see!

We stayed in the Park at one of the park owned hotels. It was great being inside the park so it was easier to get out early and see the animals (We saw most of the wolves and bears first thing in the morning and at dusk!)

I really want to go back in a bad way... I just need to find anther job where I get vacation time or learn to live without a couple weeks pay and just take the time away from work

By far the worst time of the year to go to Yellowstone is in the summer. Combined with the warmer weather at elevation and the crowds in the park, much of the wildlife retreats to higher elevations.

In the spring and late fall, the animals are coming down from the mountains and relocating into the valley floors to spend the winter.

I have friends and family who swear by winter as the best time to visit Yellowstone. They say the wildlife is more abundant, the crowds are less, and the the drama of the geysers and hot springs against the snow and ice is unmatched any other time of year.

I've not been inside Yellowstone in the winter - though I have snowmobiled out of West Yellowstone in winter - and I can support that assessment.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                        “You shouldn't wear that body.”

Is April (Easter) a bad time?

April is not a good time for the park - getting too late for winter activies but most of the park will not be open.

Steve is right on. We like fall the best, water & Mosquitos and tourists are down - great fishing. In the springtime the run off can make for poor fishing. Winter is great too - We love to Cross country ski in the park. It is very dramatic to see the geyers in the winter and the bison are all over the old faithful area but you are limited where you can go in the winter. Access is only via snow coach (Don't know if the snowmobile ban ever went into effect or not)

We stay in Island Park - there is lots to do in the island park area in both summer, fall and winter. There is great cross country skiing or snowmobiling. Downhill is probably an hour and a half away.

If it was my first time, I would stay a week at island park, a few days in the park and if I have lots of time a week in Jackson hole.

Worldmark is building in West Yellowstone which when complete will be the closest but we enjoy the island park area so are happy to stay there.

Tent camped two nights at South Jenny Lake (Teton NP). Ran through most of Yellowstone in one day... In the south gate and out the north.

Then took a motel in Gardner, MT one night in the last of August.

Seen one big buffalo walk across the spectator area of Old Faithful.
There was lots of elk grazing in town at Mammouth.

Met with no flying pest and the temps were perfect. Just right for t-shirt and shorts.

I recall commenting 'I Can Breath' on occation. The air is so great!!!

I mentiohed about doing Yellow in one day, to give you an idea that the park isn't a whole lot of miles to see everything. We could have spent a week or two if we had been hiking and fishing.

Biggest negatives: No Snow on the peaks and river flow was way down on the Snake and the Yellowstone. Crowded at Old Failhful. Not bad elsewhere.
