I had never had albariņo before, and we liked it quite a bit. DW generally prefers whites (is that a female thing) and I like reds, so when I find a white that I enjoy I tend to zero in. The albino rhino hit that target.

So based on the positive albariņo experience from winewoot, combined with my positive experiences with the Sipranillo, I decided to go in on the Sipariņo.

******

I was also intriged by the Bodegas y Vinedos Simonassi Unwooded Chardonnay that replaced the Sipranillo. I tend toward the "anything but chardonnay" crowd, but DW likes chardonnay. But with this one being unoaked - and with a description of "balanced acidity" - I'm hoping this isn't a butter bomb.

I'm reasonably certain that DW will enjoy it even if I don't, and at $7.99 per bottle that's an easy price point. Heck, if it gets hot enough almost any half-decent chardonnay will work as hot afternoon/evening bottle to accompany some salmon on the grill, no matter how buttery and oaked it might be.

And in followup to this post, we really liked the Sipariņo. I can give this one a definite thumbs up, at least based on the first bottle.

As I posted in another thread, the Simonassi chardonnay was exactly as hoped for.

I brought the first bottle of Siparino to a dinner party and they drank it after I left--my friend, the hostess, told me it was horrible. (Only a true friend would be so truly honest with me. ) Who knows, though? I'll let you know after I try it myself!

But, was the wine bad, or just not their style? I can not enjoy a rose no matter how good it may be, it is just ISH to me. Maybe this wine is their 'rose', something they just won't like.

Do let us know your opinion of the wine after you open your next bottle.

We opened a second bottle last night. It was enjoyable; a simple, slightly dry and crisp white. Which I enjoy.

That's a good question about their "style". If they were expecting a buttery smooth chardonnay style wine, then they are certainly not going to like the Sipariņo.

Yes, I suspect it was just what you're saying--the wine wasn't her style. The description said "fruity." I don't think it was spoiled bad, I suspect it was on the sweet side. I'll let you know what I think!

Really? It was dry? Now I have to try it. I'm off to put a bottle in the fridge to chill.

I found it slightly dry. I didn't make specific mental notes, but I'm thinking right now that it was perhaps like a dry riesling. The strongest impression I had was crispness, followed with a bit of fruitiness - no malo fermentation at all that I could detect.

It wasn't at all complex. The first bottle that we had was on a very hot day, and was very chilled. I thought it was an excellent selection for those circumstances.

I find it to be a pretty nice summer sipping wine at a good price.

The Sipariņo came back on Cheapskate Wednesday, and I went in for another six bottles. Great deal at $6.99 and free shipping.

Now I'm hoping I can catch it if the Sipranillo Tempranillo comes back. My stock of that is dwindling; I guess it's become our "house red".
