Making a Disney Purchase
I know that conventional wisdom says don't buy in florida because it is to easy to exchange into. But what about Disney, is that a special animal worth owning? Is it considered a power trader in II?

If you want or need the complete Disney experience, it is worth owning. Anyone who owns it and trades out of it through II is a fool, in my opinion, way to expensive buy-in and maintenance to take any sort of pig in a poke with II.

Disney is expensive and it most cost effective for using direct at the DVC timeshares. Even using it for non-DVC Disney stuff is not cost effective. If you are looking for a tiger II trader, there are much much less expensive options out there. Thankfully, there are people who do trade their DVC within II so that I can occasionally trade into DVC with my non DVC timeshare.

As a DVC owner (Boardwalk Villas and Animal Kingdom Villas), I would suggest only buying DVC if you love Disney World. Not just the four Theme Parks, but the golf, Downtown Disney, water parks, and all the other wonderful onsite attractions. Look for resales; there are lots out there.

Agreed. Never buy Disney to trade with II. You'd be paying about $20,000 for a week II trade each year. Instead, buy something resale (Westin and Sheratons trade well with II) that go for $2000 or even less on eBay.
Then occasionally try to trade INTO Disney if you want some Disney experience.
In my opinion, Disney is great because of the point system and total flexibility for length of stay and size of rooms needed. But you have to like WDW and HH because right now, those are your only options.
But hang on a bit and Disney CA and HI will be up in 2-3 years!

Owning DVC points is great and also owning other systems, too. For an upcoming vacation in a few weeks, we have a Cypress Harbour Marriott Getaway booked through our II membership, an Animal Kingdom Lodge studio booked on DVC points, and then today my sister and nephew decided to come with us. I called DVC and was able to add some nights in a studio at Saratoga Springs on DVC points. I like the flexibility of owning DVC points along with our other timeshares. We don't usually trade our DVC points, but I might if I could grab something really, really good in II. DVC members are supposed to have online II access coming up in the next few months - so that will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Yup......
DVC is a wonderful product with great flexibility - I usually trade in thru II but did help friends rent points from an owner.
I love to stay on property!
