Thread: Why not just rent rather than buy

  1. #81
If people really want to not have to vacation in the same place, they should consider a destination club, like inspirato. Its not that much to become a member and when you do, you have a whole world of options. And the way the business is set up, it makes a lot of sense. Anyway, been reading a lot about this lately since they've been getting a lot of attention- big money investments, etc.
Removed spam link BF Another interesting thread about timeshares

More about timeshares and in particular a really good thread about destination clubs, which I think it pretty much the way the timeshare world is heading ultimately.

It's interesting which old threads are surviving the test of time.

(just demonstrating how easy it is to manipulate Internet posts. )

    No purchase price.

    No ongoing obligations.

Travel just about anywhere there is a craigslist.

Selection varying from studio condos to pool homes.

    Easy to use:

    Select Craigslist location.

    Under Housing, select Vacation Rentals

We're going on our third year of reduced ownerships from 8+ weeks to two. We also have ceased to give RCI any deposits and II only gets one of our weeks from DRI points.

The results are very satisfying. We have done more traveling in the last two years and have more scheduled than we ever did when we owned all that time. Our one DRI week can be regularly converted to at least 2+ weeks in II and at prime locations & times we NEVER saw with non-points trades and without developer preference. Latest example is our 2013 week which we used to get two low time weeks in a two bedroom in Orlando, a spring break week in a two bedroom deluxe at the LV Marriott Grand Chateau and STILL have 2500 points left over! That is getting our moneys worth.

Almost all our other trips, which include: Nashville, TN (twice), Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Cape Cod July week, 2 weeks in 3 timeshares in Las Vegas in 2011, Gatlinburg, TN and an upcoming two week stay in Hawaii (2 islands) have been VERY inexpensive rentals or our one remaining fixed week (Cape Cod). All easy to get, no hassles or costs of trades - pick the spot, time & unit size (almost all 2 or more bedrooms), pay the rent and go. Much more enjoyable than dealing with exchange companies and unending annual fees.

The rules have changed and the value is nearly always in renting unless you absolutely MUST have a specific resort year after year.
Paul, find out what you can about this guy.

Well, we are planning to travel 26 weeks, none through RCI.

Back to the original topic, renting v. owning, the latest issuem of Endless Vacation hypes Extra Vacations for $399/weel, $57/night and Last Calls for $244-$294/week, as little as $35 per name.

So, we know where RCI weighs in when comes to the economics of renting or owning.

    Their name even says it:

    Renting Condos Instead

    Ha!

Extra Vacations and Last Call are a half-step away from renting direct from the owner, but feels less risky because there's an office you can raise cain with if things don't work out. I wonder sometimes if some of the guys who collect and rent DVC points might be able to diversify a bit, pick up Wyndham or Bluegreen owners and offer rentals in other touristy places ("WDW is fun, but Myrtle Beach is closer to home, has plenty to do, plus you get the ocean!" "Love theme parks, but wishing you could visit the mountains sometimes? Try Dollywood in Pigeon Forge!" "Wisconsin Dells. Scenic beauty and history, plus entertainment and waterparks!").

Although there perhaps isn't as big a crossover market as I think. TSs offer exactly what I wanted for traveling -- sizeable place of our own with a full kitchen and without maids wanting in every day -- but a lot of people who love the size of the DVC units gripe about renting points because that means no daily maid service and they like DVC units that are more "hotel like" over the ones you can park right beside, etc. But I have seen people who find out about renting DVC points for their "once in a lifetime" Disney vacation who love the agencies renting points and wish there was more of that elsewhere, so, I dunno....

I went for a travel membership over traditional timeshare. It cost me $6500 for a lifetime membership and I don't have any yearly fees. I pay as I go as often as I like and there's a ton of RCI inventory. Per week I pay between $199-$899 and I like having the flexibility.

Do I sense an ad coming? & "I pay as I go as often as I like and there's a ton of RCI inventory. Per week I pay between $199-$899 and I like having the flexibility."

If you go with craigslist, the cost is 0.
