    Wine reviews of note

Loved this CT review of 2009 Pierre-Henri Morel Côtes du Rhône Villages Signargues

Wife-Tron ordered me to host a house party full of babies and their parents, so I convinced her to let me go get a case of wine as a consolation prize. I had told her to read page 72 of the new Cosmo magazine, but she told me that I could do whatever page 72 of Cosmo said to myself and to be lucky that I was at least going to get a good buzz out of the wine to numb the psychological pain that doing this would cause.

Popped this open about an hour before guests arrived to be served with pulled pork. This was a nice CDR. Lighter in mouthfeel, blue and black fruits, lamb fat, pepper, some stemminess there, but a welcome zip of green pepper is nice in this wine. Very light smoke. The hint of an old campfire from one campsite over. Not hot, good acidity, medium length finish.

I thought this was a pretty good value, but given what page 72 has in store for me, I should have gone for a high alcohol zin or maybe just grain alcohol.

Wines from Côtes du Rhône Villages are my new favorites; we've now tried several of them, and we haven't found one yet that disappointed.

    1989 Château Haut-Bages Libéral

this would have been good had it been poured over the washboard stomach of a $1,000 an hour hooker, allowed to pool in her belly button, and then sipped thru a hep c resistant straw. alas, we had to drink it out of glass.

    2010 Copain Syrah Tous Ensemble

This wine is like your boring banker cousin who invites you to all of these sophisticated events. You get to them and you eat caviar and drink free scotch and meet beautiful women who dress nicely. This is all a wonderful experience for these people and they talk about interest rates and country clubs and ladies look at you because they know that you are not one of them and they like this and for one moment you are special.

Seems cool, right? But then you realize the sad monotony of these men (and women's) existences and this makes you sad and you talk to the pretty lady and you go onto the roof with her and you talk to her about art and books and she stares at you vacuously until you grow weary. You finish your cigar and go home. In the cab you realized that you didn't eat anything all night so you go to arbys and suck mustard out of packets and get sick.

The next morning you wonder. I should have had a good time, but didn't. The only good part was arbys.

Moral of the story: Different Strokes for Different Folks.

Music: String Cheese Incident 12/31/00 Technically proficient, extended improv, people love it. Not my bag at all though, baby.
