John - first I apologize. Reading this morning I can see how you took what I wrote in that way, and I am sorry that I didn't catch.

In no way, shape, or form was I intending to slam you. To the contrary, I was conveying my respect for your knowledge and skill. There wasn't a pica-drop of sarcastic intent of what I wrote. Rather what I was trying to convey - and probably should have stated more directly - was that unless a person was savvy enough (like you) to know full well that they were not being infected despite visiting a site with a known infection and using a vulnerable OS and a vulnerable browser, that is reason for them to question they're software.

I truly was trying to hold you up as a standard, and not mock you. I do have tremendous respect for your skills and knowledge, John. I am very sorry that I bungled the message so badly.

I accept your apology. I had always believed that you were a class act and now you have confirmed it.

Now, I have a question for you. Aren't you a geologist? The reason I ask, is my dad was a geologist. He he had his Bachelor's in Mining and Metallurgy and Master's in Geology. He had a teaching fellowship at Cal Tech. When I was a kid, I used to travel with him when he went on his geology trips. I collected tons of rocks and could name that all. Unfortunately. I have forgotten most of it.

I'm a professor of computer science---and one who has done some work in networking security, some of which has been sponsored by NSA. Depending on your definitions, I may or may not be "uninformed".

I'm also an Apple customer, and prefer their platforms to windows/linux/android/etc., so I'm not an Apple basher.

That said, I do not agree with your characterization. It may be that Mac OS X, as a platform, has fewer attack surfaces than Windows. However, I'm not aware of any credible analyses that have quantified the risk. I am also aware of genuine vulnerabilities in various Apple platforms, including OS X. And, I do believe that market share has some influence on the overall level of malware activity. Indeed, as we've seen Apple platforms gain market share, we have also seen an increase in malware activity targeting them.

I do agree that market share has some influence but that is not the only reason.

Linux is my preferred OS for PCs. I have it on 2 of my computers that I have used for software development. However there are others that I like better.

I confess that I miss NetBSD. First kernel I ever seriously hacked, by adding a new file system driver. I also spent a lot of time in the guts of Mach, a predecessor of Mac OS X. The various other BSD variants were all pleasant, as was System V, IRIX, and even Apollo's Domain OS. But, I'm at the point in my life where I'd rather not fix things, and have them Just Work. Mac OS X seems better at that than anything else I've ever used.
