    carpeting

we are trying to get new carpeting for my mother's condo. my sister paid Lowes to come out and measure. in the meantime i found two old carpeting receipts. 11 years ago, she did lr, dr, hall and two bedrooms with 56 sq yards of carpeting. Lowes measured without the 2nd bedroom, and figures she needs 87 square yards, or 744 sq feet. this is with one less room. how can you account for this? I found an earlier receipt that did 56 sq yards also, so something is fishy, and those 56 sq yard jobs included two bedroom. (12 by 20 lv, 10 by 10'8" dr, 11 by 15 br, and a hall.

They wrote or read a number wrong? Without the hall, you're at about 500 square feet.

Size of the roll can make a difference, as well as if the carpet has a directional pattern. There could be more (needed) waste in those cases.

    Im counting 120 + 110 + 165 = 393 Sq Ft devided by 9 = 44 sq yds.

I'm just amazed you had to pay someone to come out and measure. We just got new carpeting and didn't pay until after it was installed.

You're not counting the hall, which the OP didn't give measurements for.

    Oh Yeah, I mised the hall. So, 56 sq yds X 9 = 504 sq. ft. 504 - 744 = 240 sq ft .

240 sq ft is alot of flooring to add as waste, imo.

We bought carpeting and laminate flooring, with installation, from Lowe's years ago, and although we've spent thousands of dollars there since then, I wouldn't buy flooring from them again. They charged for measuring, came out and gave us an estimate. The carpeting estimate seemed okay, but the laminate flooring they wanted to order was way over--like three big boxes over. We went back to the store and the guy there said, oh yeah, you're right, and took the three boxes off the order.

Then weeks and weeks went by and I was calling trying to make the installation date. They kept saying the materials weren't in. Finally I got a manager and he said, oh no, you didn't order enough. It turned out that we had to order whatever the estimate said, or else they would not come to do the installation! They ordered the three more boxes, the guys finally came to do the installation, and surprise surprise, three boxes left over. My DH had a huge argument with the store trying to return the three boxes...which were a special order so not returnable! They finally did take them back, but it was a lot of arguing.

Don't get me wrong -- I definitely agree. Something is fishy about that estimate from Lowes.

It gets fishier, the estimate they faxed to me is for 62 sq yards after telling me 87 on the phone. the supposed installation fee is 238, but they have 745 on the faxed info sheet. a call to the store - frustration, no one answers the phone, I am waiting for a call back. took several calls to even leave a message. Meanwhile i found the bill from 2001 and stopped at the store. he would measure for free, but I gave him the bigger installation size that was told me on the phone. My sister dealt with Lowes on the morning begfore she flew ot of the country, and she will handle it when she gets back. their information sheet says remove old carpeting one day, install the next. what the heck do you do with all the furniture in a small condo overnight?
