When to visit Williamsburg?

I am helping a friend plan a vacation to Williamsburg as part of their homeschool year. She has one teen boy that is obsessed with the civil war and a teen daughter that is really into early American history. They also have a handful of younger children. When would be the best time of year for them to visit? I checked several websites and they only had 2012 events up. I didn't. Find anything for 2013. Are their annual events that we could look up.

Yes, I've put a call out to them already because they don't have 2013 dates listed online.

The first 2013 event is February 16-24, 2013.

My vote would be late May, the first week in June or the first 2 weeks in September. This is based primarily on the pool situation. I haven't been impressed by any of the TS resorts indoor pools. Summer time when school is out is too crowded and often too hot. Relaxing in the big outdoor pools or in the Ocean during a day trip to VA Beach (if you are not spending more time there) is nice after a day of history. Busch gardens will be open at least weekends during this time and the first week of June Water Country USA would also be open. If they want to make it a two week trip-Massanutten, VA Beach, Outer Banks and DC are also good this time of year.

If I weren't traveling with children who would enjoy the pools- I would bump it to early May, late September or early October for the best weather. Most of the historic attractions are open year round but if you are freezing getting from place to place or ready to pass out from the heat, it is not as enjoyable.

I have been there in late April and am going back next year early April with my sister - her DD attends William and Mary.

I agree for the homeschoolers, a week near Easter Break when everything is open OR early-late May before it gets REALLY hot would be the best (and the days are long).

Sept/Oct - nice weather but sunset is early.

I'm not sure there's much going on at Colonial Williamsburg for children when it's NOT school break or a homeschoolers event. We've been there over Christmas week, and there are some events for children--but not a lot. I'm not sure how much there would be during an ordinary fall, winter, or spring week when most kids are in school.

Both Sept. and Feb. are when the homeschooling events (and discounts) are. Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg also has homeschooling discounts at the same time usually.
