Lake Delton - It grew eerily quiet below the dam Wednesday morning, not far from where Lake Delton disappeared through a chasm six months ago.
As the last of three gates on the newly renovated dam closed, the quiet sound of water spilling through ebbed and then stopped. The stillness was the first step in filling the lake, which lost most of its liquid in a catastrophic breach last summer.
"You can hear the sound is changing - no more running water," said Meg Galloway, chief of dams and floodplains for the Department of Natural Resources, as she stood on the snowy slope overlooking the dam shortly after it closed at 10:15 a.m.
With traffic once again traversing Highway A next to the dam, the next item on the agenda to bring Lake Delton back to life is letting the lake fill back up.
"Things have gone surprisingly well," Galloway said. "It's atypical for this type of project to move so quickly."
What took a little over an hour to disappear will take much longer to reappear.
Even though most of the lake disappeared on the morning of June 9, a small stream of water has flowed continuously through one part of the lake. That's where the carp have been hanging out.
Because water flows from Mirror Lake through Dell Creek and into Lake Delton before eventually flowing over the dam and down into the Wisconsin River, the water level on Mirror Lake was recently lowered.
It could take a week before Mirror Lake fills back up and sends more water to Lake Delton, said Paul Werner, senior engineering specialist.
The lower water level is allowing the DNR to eradicate carp - a non-native species - before more water flows into Lake Delton and dilutes the poison so other species will not be affected.
On Wednesday, DNR employees powered an airboat over part of the lake bed where water had pooled to dispense a poison that will eradicate the hundreds of carp that remain.
The plan was to inject the poison in four spots on the lake after workers powered the airboat in circles to open holes in the ice.
Carp eradication is the first step in restoring the lake to its status as a good fishing spot, said Andy Morton, the DNR's Lower Wisconsin Watershed Basin supervisor.
The poisoned carp carcasses will drop to the bottom of the lake.
Officials are working on a plan to stock the lake with largemouth bass, bluegill, walleye, crappie and forage fish.
Water will be allowed in Lake Delton until the lake is about half full, the level engineers want throughout the winter.
Then, in the spring, the dam will close again so the lake can fill up in time for anglers, boaters and the skiers at Tommy Bartlett's show.
