Star Trek

Saw it over the weekend. Mostly good and the special effects were very good, but story line flawed re: Spock's Mother ?

Nit-picking, per usual..............

How was the story line flawed? They were essentially making a new timeline. As far as canon is concerned, everything that we knew about the Star Trek universe never happened.

What I didn't like was the romantic interaction between Uhuru and Spock. It seemed a little forced to me.

WARNING: SPOILER HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay then, here's how I think it is flawed.............. Spock's Mother was in subsequent shows, both TV and movies (The Search for Spock). So, if she was killed when he was a young man, how did she show up later when he was a grown man ?

Do I have this wrong ? I get tripped up in time warp changey things, although I do like the idea.

Thanks,
B.

Now that you posted the SPOILER NOTICE...

I think you missed that from the point of the first encounter w/ the Romulan mining ship where Kirk's father died, a new parallel timeline / alternate reality began. The act of that ship coming through the wormhole started the new parallel timeline. In this new timeline, not only is Spock's mother dead, but indeed the whole Vulcan planet and most of their race is gone.

The existance of this new timeline opens all types of possibilities for new shows / movies -- the characters are still there, but they don't have to tie in with events that took place in the original Start Trek timeline.

As for the movie, I really enjoyed it as well. I personally thought it was the best Trek movie to date. And I really like the new Spock character -- the scene where he was in front of the Vulcan council showed a spark of defiance in his eyes: fantastic!

Overall, a great movie with even greater possibilities in the future.

Kurt

PD & Chap,
AH, the alternate/parallel universe thingy here ?

Thank you for clearing things up (I think). The writers sort of left that up to the viewer, but I'm not the only one who came away with that. http://digg.com/movies/11_Mistakes_I...Movie?FC=PRCK3 Scroll down.

My favorite was "The Voyage Home" with the whales.

Ah, the trouble with Tribbles..........

Spoiler Alert still in effect...

Personally, I find plotlines around changes in the space/time continuum to be a bit tiresome... to do it to avoid having to be consistent with prior ST storylines seems a copout, and the idea of Vulcan getting destroyed is hard to take - I kept waiting for it to reappear after another reversal of events involving red matter...

Having said that, I enjoyed the movie, though I found the violence too graphic and a few of the scenes/subplots laughable (though that was true of the original, this was missing the "kitch" factor). The waterboarding-esque scene with Capt Pike was just a bit much (and disappointing... an insect?!). I also think some of it look like Star Wars rather than ST.

Has everyone gotten the new Star Trek glasses from Burger King? I was lucky, they sold me all four at once

I haven't seen the new movie yet, but it would be almost impossible to top the Wrath of Khan, which is my favorite to date.

Well, that my opinion -- you are welcome to your own, of course. I'm sure my Trek preferences had a lot to do with that opinion: I am a bit more of a ST:NG fan than the original Star Trek. This movie had more of a NG-style plot, IMO.

The cinematography, the writing, the character re-enactment, etc. was all fantastic in this latest movie. I felt that some of the characters had a bit more depth, especially Spock. And being able to take advantage of newer technologies, the action scenes and special effects were more "realistic" (as far as SciFi can be "realistic").
