Yes, that's true and so far I have never been in a trial. I have been sitting there waiting several days on a row but never been interviewed yet either. I refuse to go to the ones too far away so they send me close and one time I was excused because I could prove that we had a trip planned so they listen to you, if you have an issue.

You can get an automatic postponement up to 90 days. When you get your notice, you are advised to check the night before your date to see if you have to report. In Riverside County, you can do it on-line. This only goes on for one week if you are not called to report and then your jury service is considered to be complete. I am referring to Riverside County only. I do not know about Federal courts other than my wife was excused from having to report for jury duty at a Federal court a couple of years ago.

If you don't want to serve, I have found a way that works pretty well. When I get my notice, I call them to postpone the date. I tell them that I can't give them a specific date so they told me to just show up within the next 90 days. I did this more than once and was not called to serve on a jury. I believe that they already have their list of people to call before you actually report. So all you do is just sit in the waiting room for 4 hours or so and then you are dismissed. In any event it seems to work for me and others I have talked to. Don't get me wrong, I really do not mind serving and believe it is my civic duty to do so. However, at the times that I did this I was working as a consultant in the SF Bay area and really couldn't serve without some pretty severe hardship for me and my clients. The times that I wanted to serve, I was not asked to report. They will not excuse you for any reason other than failure to meet the requirements to be a juror. Only the judge can excuse you after you have been selected to serve.

I reported on Tuesday - one of 100 people.

I was the fifth name called out of 24.

They called 6 people and explained a bit about the case......
Then 3 more...
Then 3 more and they had their panel of 6 jurors.....

Then they needed to alternate jurors so called 2 more.....BINGO!

all this completed by 11:15 am

Reported back Wednesday at 10:30, got a 2 hour lunch at 12:15, completed for the day by 3PM

Back on Thursday at 10:00 for closing arguments and judges instructions....and was 'released' at 11 as my service was no longer needed.

Spoke to the 3 attorneys after we were done who wanted to know how we would have voted (this was optional as told to us by the judge) and now I am done for 6 years..... (could still be called for town and village duty)

Very interesting and I have a renewed respect for our legal systems and its' workings.
