I am a person who likes to stay off site with a car. I don't like being at the mercy of Disney pricing on everything for a week. Any of the resorts mentioned are great though. The Marriott Horizon's has a great pool for little ones. It's called something else now, but I can't remember what...
You'll have a fabulous time wherever you stay! Have fun!

Great resort and close to everything (shopping & theme parks).

We love the convenience of staying on-site at DVC.

If you aren't renting a car I'd say DVC. We have a Hilton timeshare and love it except for the lack of free shuttles. You have to pay for one and it only goes to EPCOT (as far as our last visit went).
We stay on International Drive and Hilton has some fun programs that are either free or a few dollars and you can do a pay as you go without committing to activities the kids don't want.
On Saturdays they have a movie shown at the main pool and the kids can sit on floats, swim or sit in the lounge chairs.

Beginning of May is a slower time for the parks and area. There are usually lots of things in RCI last call then. good time of year to go...

Since you are going in May I'd try for a last call for Sheraton Vistana. It's a real nice resort and there is usually last call inventory for $249 for a 2 bedroom and it's down the road from Downtown Disney.
Ask them for one of the remodeled rooms when you get there.
You could always just park in downtown Disney and use the buses from there. Saves on parking fees.

What are some "non disney" things to do with a 5 & 4 y/o? Nearest beach? Maybe an everglade tour? We may try to be there for 2 weeks to have time to "do it all"
