Forever Postage Stamps . . . Or Are They?
When the Postal Service announced forever stamps, ones without an amount printed on them, I bought a roll of 100. The stamps just say First Class on them.
I don't mail much, but the other day I happened to hand a letter to our Postmaster. She said that stamp needs another penny.
Huh!?

I was told that they do not make them in 100 rolls. I asked why and was told that businness would buy them all up.

I also understood that they were not issued in rolls. You might have the rare one they misprinted and may be a millionaire and don't know it!
BUT I suspect that you have a coil of FLAG stamps that just say First Class with no cents listed. These are 41cent stamps and require an additional penny.
FOREVER stamps have a Liberty Bell and say First Class Forever on them.

Ohhhhhh! Thanks for clearing this up. I have a bunch of the flag stamps and I thought they were Forever Stamps, too. (Actually I think the post office might think so too...I get them all the time without postage due, and no one I mail to ever seems to get dunned for the extra penny.)

If you go to USPS.com and click on buy stamps and go to coils, there are no Forever stamps listed and the FLAG stamps without denomination ALL say they need an extra penny for first class. My guess is that the USPS rightly surmises that it costs more than a penny to take the trouble of sorting out and then returning it so it just gets delivered.

Apparently Jim, you bought the wrong stamps.
You know the coil thing doesn't make a lot of sense either- why wouldn't businesses buy a bunch of the 20 stamp cards ? Coils don't make things that much easier. A few years ago, all I bought was coils, but since then I've been partial to the booklets.

Costco also sells the Forever Stamp, but not in a roll.

Yes, all of this was explained to me already, by the Postmistress, but thanks any way.
Who cares if they were printed as 41 cent stamps or Forever stamp?. Is the hassle of hassling the customer worth a penny?
