The Pacific Whale Foundation (http://www.pacificwhale.org/) and other companies have tours starting from this little harbor which is closer to Kihei than where Lahaina is. We have done many tours from here with the PWF on the spur of the moment in the afternoon if it wasn't windy or busy but we find the tours better starting from Lahaina, especially if you have to make reservations in advance because it seems to be less windy there. It may not be always this way but that is our experience. The calmer the ocean is, the easier it is to spot whales in a distance.

The Maui Ocean Center (http://www.mauioceancenter.com/) is located near the little harbor too at Maalaea Village and is well worth seeing. There are some restaurants too and we have seen whales playing there right from the restaurant or even from the parking lot.

If you happen to own "Maui Revealed, 2nd Edition", go to page 45 and find #9 which is a scenic lookout and when you stop your car there and watch for a while, you will see whales often from the shore during whale season but be careful driving out.

My Maui 2005 Picturetrail album shows some pictures from whale watching from the Lahaina harbor under my signature file.
