The current offer at wine.woot: Pacific Wine Works Mendocino County Gewürztraminer 4-Pack by Meeker: $24.99 + $5 shipping (http://wine.woot.com/). Note that shipping is the same $5 no matter how many cases you buy.

If you feel venturesome you might consider this. Meeker Vineyards is a pretty solid and reliable producer in the California North Coast area. I've bought several of their woot offerings before and have been quite pleased. As far as I can determine this is their first ever Gewürz. If this is up to their usual standards this is a screaming great deal. But there's no track history on this varietal and almost no information other than what is already posted at the wine.woot site. Which might be the reason why it's at this price.

I bought two packs (8 bottles), based on my previous good experience with Meeker and my overall general confidence in Dave Studman's screening of the wines offered at wine.woot. (I've never had anything from them that I thought was plonk, though I have had several orders that I ended up giving away because it wasn't my style, such as some creamy oak-bomb chardonnays).

I figure at worst it's probably to be on a par with some of the decent bulk-produced Washington gewürzes that I can get at the grocery store for about $6 to $8/bottle (less on sale), and there's a very good chance it's going to be better than that. Plus DW likes gewürz and isn't that picky so I'm pretty sure it will be enjoyed.

Speculation among the early commenters at wine.woot is that this is going to be a fast sellout, given the pricing and the overall reputation of Meeker.

If we drank white I would be all over this at that price

Offering still up - will be there for another six hours if it doesn't sell out.

Generally positive comments in the community, with at least one well-respected Napa vintner (Scott Harvey of Scott Harvey Wines (http://www.scottharveywines.com/)) making a purchase for himself based upon his knowledge of and respect for the Meeker operation.

According to the vintner, their plans for marketing this wine went astray when the economy tanked. Large volume producers started cutting the prices on their wines and eliminated the niche they had planned for the wine. So they've got this product that they need to move, and wine.woot proved fortuitous for them.

So right now this feels much less "risky" than it did when I made the purchase in the wee hours. If you like dry Gewürz, this looks like it could be a splendid deal.
